- 400–499 employeesHR is no longer a project. It is a function.
- 300–399 employeesHR should be a structure, not a person.
- 250–299 employeesMore people. More managers. Still only 24 hours in a day.

- 75–99 employeesOne HR person. A great many hats.
- 50–74 employees”Can I just ask a quick HR thing?” x 47.
- 25–49 employeesAsking the CEO is starting to look like a bad HR process.
- 15–24 employeesSomeone became responsible for HR without being asked.

The alternative is not to skip HR, it is that the work has to get done somehow. Either someone at your company handles it alongside their real job, an existing HR function gets more on its plate, you keep an HR consultant on retainer, or you have to hire more people. Either way it costs time and money.
A company with 75 to 99 employees usually needs its own head of HR. Salary plus employer contributions for that role come to SEK 1,088,158 a year.

How we calculated this
What the internal cost is. Salary plus employer contributions of 31.42 percent, based on Statistics Sweden's salary data SEK 48,500 a month for an HR generalist (median 2025) and SEK 69,000 a month for a head of HR (mean 2024). A full-time HR generalist therefore costs SEK 764,864 a year and a head of HR SEK 1,088,158 a year.
What is not included. Occupational pension, workspace, equipment and recruitment. The real cost is therefore higher than the figures in the table.
How large we assume the HR function to be. We count 0.15 of a role at 14 employees, rising to four at 499. From 75 employees one of those roles is a head of HR, who costs more than a generalist, which is why the internal cost cannot be reproduced by multiplying the label in the table by a generalist salary. The industry benchmark is 1.7 HR roles per 100 employees according to SHRM, and 3.4 per 100 for companies under 100 employees according to AIHR. Our assumptions sit deliberately below both, so the comparison is conservative.
The share. Wndy costs between 13 and 33 percent of what the same HR function costs with your own staff, depending on the size band. The share falls as the company grows.
